Church of San Pietro - Modica
Located in the heart of the city and surrounded by palaces and convents, the Church of San Pietro is the second temple of the city of Modica. As with most of the late Dobarocca architecture of the Val di Noto, the earthquake of 1963 was decisive. The structure of the church, in fact, suffered a lot of damage and documents related to the history of the church were dispersed during the previous centuries. The most important aesthetic value of the interior is given by the wide space of the central nave illuminated by large side windows and delicate nineteenth-century stuccoes; the apse is made monumental by the twin columns with a layout still seventeenth-century in the design, from the altars framed by spiral columns and all the works of sculpture, painting, jewelry preserved in the church such as the “Madonna di Trapani” by Francesco Laurana, the polychrome “San Pietro e il paralitico”, by Benedetto Civiletti from Palermo, the monumental organ, work of the brothers Polizzi and inaugurated in 1924, consisting of 3200 pipes, 32 registers and two keyboards and the silver reliquary urn bears dated 1643.
A suggestive place absolutely to admire. Good walk!
